Coring techniques

We developed a comprehensive set of tools for in-situ coring of speleothems (cores of 8 and 20 mm diameter with a maximum core length 130 cm, and cores of 80 mm diameter, up to 3.5 m long).
For a description of some of these devices see Spötl & Mattey (2012).

A percussion drilling set consisting of a gasoline-driven Wacker hammer, a hydraulic extraction system, percussion gouges and 17 m of extension rods is used to takes cores down to 16 m depth in soft sediments.
