Field work Obir Caves

Obir Caves are one of the most decorated caves in Austria and the site of a long-term environmental monitoring by our group as well as of earthquake activity led by Lukas Plan and his team from the Natural History Museum in Vienna. The origin of these caves, however, is still poorly known. We long suspected that these cavities, which lack natural entrances and were only discovered during mining operations, have a hypogene origin. To test this hypothesis we spent three days in these caves, studied their morphology, took wall-rock samples for geochemical analysis and launched a complete re-survey of the system. This work is done together with Lukas Plan as well as Harald Langer (Fachgruppe für Karst- und Höhlenkunde) and involves several members of our group - and we will definitely return in 2019.
