This joint project between the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) aims at tracing the migration of the southern permafrost boundary along the 1000 km-stretch of the Ural Mountains over the past glacial-interglacial cycles. The project will employ an innovative dual-archive approach, using common speleothems as markers of permafrost-free conditions and cryogenic cave carbonates as a marker of degrading permafrost conditions (0°C-isotherm).
