Geoarchaeology fieldwork in Australia

Despite their ubiquity around the Australian continent, there is almost no data-driven information about the antiquity or development of stone arrangement sites or their cultural context, in part because these site types are very difficult to date. During this field season, four stone arrangement sites in the Pilbara region of Western Australia were excavated with the aim of collecting samples to test a novel luminescence-based approach to dating their construction. Once a chronological framework is established, these sites can be contextualized with other long-term technological, demographic, and palaeoenvironmental trends to better understand their development and function.
